Industry Placement at ICAD by Caoimhe Neeson

As part of the Real World Engagement module in Second Year Contemporary Visual Culture, we each get to complete a work placement with one of the many institutions that are linked to the programme. I chose to complete my placement in ICAD, the Institute of Creative Advertising and Design . ICAD is a non-profit organisation who aim to foster, promote and reward creative excellence in Irish advertising and design. They run exhibitions, talks, workshops and learning programmes, all of which are geared towards designers. They are also distributors of the prestigious ICAD awards and assist with the Young Directors Awards. I chose to do my placement here because many of the modules that we have in CVC are design-oriented and I developed an interest in graphic design. I wanted to find out more about the industry and it was very lucky that I had the opportunity to do this in my course. Contemporary Visual Culture lecturer, Dr Niamh Ann Kelly will be launching her fantastic new book on the visual commemoration of the Irish Famine at the Irish Museum of Modern art this coming Friday, 24th August. Study Trip to London

At the end of the last academic year, a group of Postgraduate and Undergraduate students from CVC visited London with lecturers Dr Tim Stott and Dr Mary Ann Bolger. A few of the highlights included: Behind-the-scenes tour of the Victoria and Albert Museum with Dr Moya Carey, Iran Heritage Foundation Curator for the Iranian Collections. Meeting with V&A Head of Digital Media, Kati Price, who discussed digital marketing and publishing in the 21st century museum. A day of modernist architecture for humans and animals, starting with a tour of the architectural highlights of London Zoo, including Berthold Lubetkin's iconic Penguin Pool. Later students walked around Hampstead in the footsteps of the Bauhaus members who moved to London in the 1930s, ending with a tour of the Grade II* listed Willow Road by Erno Goldfinger.

Real World Engagement Guest Lecturer Simon O'Connor

This week’s guest lecturer in the Real World Engagement series run by BA Contemporary Visual Culture is Simon O’Connor, Director of the new Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) . Simon O'Connor is a composer, curator and founding Director of MoLI, whose career in the creative industries has ranged from screaming punk rock in dive bars to classical composition, editorial design and publishing, branding and marketing, and co-founding the Little Museum of Dublin. We are delighted to welcome Simon back to speak about his new role. Contemporary Chinese Image-making

Each year, CVC students join their studio-based colleagues in a "discipline history" module. Students can choose either art history, history of interior design, or graphic design history. In third year, these modules deal with recent and contemporary art and and design. This week, for example, the Design Now: graphics module had a lecture on contemporary image-making in China. The talk was given by our visiting colleague, Lulu Zhang, from Gen Dang Institute at the Beijing Institute of Technology in China.
